Trillanes to steps down in 2019-tuloy ang laban kay Duterte
While opposition Senator Antonio Trillanes IV would be stepping down as he hits the term limit next year, the public should not expect him to fizzle away into irrelevance.
Trillanes said that while he has no plans to run for another elective post, he would still push with his fight against President Rodrigo Duterte.
“Definitely, I will not run for another office pero hindi ako mawawala. I will continue with my advocacy. Titindigan pa rin natin si Duterte, papakita natin sa kanya na hindi ko kailangan ng posisyon para lumaban sa kanya,” Trillanes said Wednesday (June 6) in an interview with reporters.
The senator, one of the most vocal critics of Duterte, can no longer run for another term as the Constitution prohibits senators to vye for a third consecutive term. Trillanes first became a senator in 2007 and was re-elected in 2013.
This, however, does not stop him from vying for other elective posts, like becoming a district of party-list representative.
His partymate, Magdalo party-list Rep. Gary Alejano has formally accepted the nomination of the group composed of former mutineers for him to run as senator in the 2019 polls, possibly replacing Trillanes in the upper chamber.
“In the coming weeks ay magpaplano na kami how to ensure his victory in the elections,” Trillanes said.
It is unclear who Magdalo would field as its nominee for the party-list elections, with Trillanesno longer seeking an elective post, Alejano running for senator, and its former representative, Ace Acedillo, still taking up law at the University of the Philippines College of Law.
One thing is certain, if Trillanes would no longer seek an elective post, we would not be hearing the last of him when he steps down on June 30, 2019.
Asked if he is wary that he would face the full force of Duterte once he is out of office, Trillanes said, “Let him do his worst. Papakita ko na duwag siya, oh na wala na akong pwesto.” /Read full: Politiko
